I am getting multiple reports from readers of mine that Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 is reporting that the Cubs and Padres are in heavy negotiations for Jake Peavy. Two readers even said Levine stated that Towers likes Marshall, Pie, Cedeno, and getting back Ceda( they traded him to us for Todd Walker) and a potential deal could get done before the end of the GM meetings.
This is an "Unfound Rumor" so take this with a grain of salt but I thought I would pass it along. I will update you on more details as soon as I come across them. I did send Bruce an email so hopefully he gets back to me soon to confirm this.
If anyone has any updates on this rumor, please feel free to post a comment!

sounds like a great deal for us if the rumor turns out to be true, i could see marshall wining between10-14 games for the padres next year, cedeno becoming the new ss when they trade greene, pie roaming the spacious gaps of petco and getting consistant playing time and ceda entering their bulpen automatically. But i think they will ask for one more person
I wouldnt mind Abreu depending on the price.
I still dont understand why Demp is a priority over Wood. Our depth in both the rotation and pen is the same. I am assuming Wood would require less years and less money.
It might take more than those names or a couple different set of names to snag Peavy, but I would draw that line at 4 prospects. But the Demp wants to test FA waters announcement comes at a bad time if this deal is really being discussed hard... cause now the Pads know the Cubs need a quality arm for the rotation that much more.
And if Marshall is sent the other way, we need to find two lefty pen arms instead of just one. Cotts doesnt do it for me.
Everyone take one last look at Ward and Howry. Glad Howry wont be back.
It isn't true. I did hear that Peavy would waive his NTC for NY and LAA so that adds to the cost for him.

Nice.. what do you think the odds of the cubs trading for Peavy right now??
I will be glade when Howry is officially gone too. But he's a type A player so the Cubs may offer him arbitration to get a high draft pick. What if nobody signs him. Cubs would be stuck with him for another year.
