Cubs Projections and Stoney on the Cubs

- PECOTA has updated their projections for the 2009 season. The Cubs are going to go 96-66 with a 13 game lead over the Brewers in the Central according to Baseball Prospects. Another interesting note is the Cubs leading the NL in runs scored (871), team average (.270), and team OBP of .350 in 2009. I would personally pick the Cubs to go 93-69 next season and win the Central.

- Stoney talked Cubs baseball with Kaplan Monday night, here is what he had to say-

**** He thinks the Cubs have a solid team and Jim did a good job this winter.

**** Stone thinks the Cubs should run away with the division if they just take care of business and avoid 3 major player injuries.

**** Stone likes the idea of the Cubs getting Peavy but the Cubs do not need him to win the division.

**** He thinks Peavy would have been added already if the Cubs did not think they could win the division how they are now. He also thinks the Cubs would have made the trade now if they had more concerns with Harden.

**** Stoney feels if a big outfielder goes down for the Cubs then Matt Holliday would be available during the season if the A's have fallen out of contention. He mentioned this because of Soriano's leg issues. He also thinks that if the Cubs do not land Peavy before Opening Day they would use the players rumored to go to the Padres during the deadline period to add a player. But this would be only if a major star like Soriano, Lee, Aram, Z, etc goes down.

**** Stone thinks Miles would be better out of the lead off spot than Soriano and said no team has ever won a WS with Soriano on the roster (WOW). He went onto saying Soriano is not a lead off hitter and I agree. I think Fukudome, Johnson, Theriot, Mile, and Fonty could do a better job in the 1 hole.

More to Come!

totally agree cubs have better leadoff options then soriano. lik theriot or fonty. i would be all about the cubs signing hudson and trading for peavy. the cubs messed up and signed miles too early they didnt anticipate this much talent being available this late

I like the idea of Holliday! The question is, what would be the price and could the Cubs have the players for the trade, if/when they get Peavy? I dont think the Cubs could get Peavy and then make a run for Holliday. I see the A's being a "piece" of the ALW. I would be surprised if the A's aren't in the race out there.

No team with Steve Stone on the roster ever won the World Series either. Or Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo.

Stupid comment Steve, but anymore I'm not surprised.

Soriano won a ring with the Yankees so Stone is talking out his ass lol.

I am a huge Cubs fan. But I have to be real, there is no way that this team is any better than last years. Yes, we did add Milton, however we lost our MVP last year. Derosa is a guy that can only be gotten rid of if we could get a Peavy. Until then, our starting rotation has big holes. Big Z under-acheives every year, and we keep waiting for that 20 win Cy Young season that we all know he is capable of. Demp is not going to repeat his big year. When the pressure is on, he gets tight, we saw that when he was a closer. Harden's arm is held together with silly putty. Lilly does his thing he is a tipical 3 starter he does fine. Soriano can't be relied on in the post-season, everyone saw him give up at the end of last year. Did the same with the Yanks. Derek Lee needs to GO. He has been clogging up our lineup with double play balls for too many years. Again, just my take, I was fake all of these years believing and hoping that each year would be different, but now I can't be anything but real. Must gets for postseason success: Peavy, another lefty in the bullpen, a true leadoff hitter.
