Lots of rumors involving the Cubs today, lets get caught up!
- If the Cubs fall out of the Sabathia race then they may turn to Randy Wolf, Greg Maddux, or Erik Bedard. All are available via trade and the Padres and Mariners have been informed of the Cubs interest.
- The Cubs need a top tier starter and they prefer to land a nice lefty to complete the rotation of Z, Lilly, and Dempster. The Cubs number one choice is Sabathia but they have tough competition with the Yankees losing Wang. Their other alternative is Erik Bedard or Randy Wolf.
- Gary Hughes( Special Assistant to the GM) was scouting the A's and Giants game recently. The Cubs are not looking at position players but pitchers. Rich Harden maybe??
- Sabathia maybe traded sooner rather than later to maximize value in return. The Cubs, Rangers, Cardinals, Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox all are interested in acquiring the lefty.
- According to 1460 kxno out of Iowa, the Cubs maybe interested in Carlos Beltran. The Mets are an aging team with young players that could be ready for the ML next season. Carlos has fallen out of favor with the fans and staff and could delt if " the right deal came around". The Mets need young pitching and outfield so the Cubs maybe a good match. Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson have done a good job in the outfield for the Cubs and by no means am I saying there better than Beltran but I think we need pitching more. Beltran is signed through the 2011 season. He is owed 18.5 million for each of the next 4 seasons.

18 million for Beltran, 13 million for Burnett, 11 million for C.C., 10 million for Maddux. I think Cubs are more in the 5 million range, Harden or Wolf. And since they tryed to get Bedard from Baltimore earlier this year maybe they would pay 7 million for him. Hill will make about 7 more starts before the trading dead line. Lets see what he can do first. Thats my opinion.
Rich Harden, when healthy, is a BEAST.
Still would love CC over any of those other options. Bedard would not be a bad second option though. Carlos Beltran is intriguing though, (agree that another top-tier starter is the #1 priority) if he came for the right price and they ate some of his salary i wouldn't mind him in center. not that Jim or Reed have done a bad job i just think a power/switch hitting center fielder that can go get em' would be nice. i also think he would thrive in our batting order and kill at Wrigley.
Beltran... no thanks.
Beltran is a bad clubhouse guy.
Beltran hasn't hit .300 since 2003- His power and RBI numbers are way down year over year, too. The days of looking for slugging outfielders is OVER. We need players with good plate discipline, speed and high OBP/average. Beltran is NOT that guy. JIMBO bl*w me. Your living in the steroid days of the past.
Lou seems to have a knack for taking care of those who are a problem in the club house. Look what he has done to Ramirez. The guy now runs to 1st base & tries to extend long base hits (did not happen 2 years ago). BELTRAN WOULD BE AWESOME! A switch hitting power hitter that would be more use than this year?? Sounds like a no brainer...assuming you get another solid starter first!
