- The Chicago Cubs made some moves today sending Angel Guzman to the 60 day DL. Andrew Cashner was called up and put in the bullpen taking Guzman's 40 man roster spot and Grabow was sent to the DL for 15 days because of a "left knee sprain."
Having watched this team continue to fall apart and play below .500 baseball for the entire year so far has me wondering if this team should be dismantled and built back up with young talent and worth while free agents. Besides players like Marlon Byrd, Ryan Dempster, Carlos Silva, and some random others, this team does not mesh well and looks like there hearts are not in it. I think players like Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez simply do not care and are just going through the motions. Both corner infielders are suppose to be the leaders of this team but are acting like spoiled veterans who are just interested in cashing checks. These veterans simply have no consequences because they have a manager that lets them do whatever. If I was Tom Ricketts I would look at dramatically altering this team at the deadline especially if they are hanging around .500 or below that.
The Cubs need to add hard-working young talented players that know how to play the game the right way. First we have to acknowledge trading players like Soriano and Zambrano are not likely because of their contract but players like Aramis Ramirez, Fukudome, Lee, etc are players that could and should be dealt around the deadline because they do not fit into the fold next season. Put all these players on the block-

You have probably noticed I pretty much labeled everyone on the roster except Castro, Wells, Soto, Marmol, etc... All those other players have leadership, small contract, or at least a reasonable contact. The others do not fit into the model of what I would do to build a team.
Lets face it Cub fans, the Cubs need to start over, build on young talent, and add key free agents as they get better and realize their holes. A perfect model is the Tampa Bay Rays, they have a ton of young talent that came up through their minor leagues that start everyday for them right now. That should be the model for the Cubs. The Cubs have Andrew Cashner, Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney, Josh Vitters, Hak-Ju Lee, Randy Wells, Casey Coleman, Jay Jackson, Brett Jackson, etc... You mix them with veterans like Marlon Byrd, Sean Marshall, and other players that are likely not to be traded because of contract (ie Soriano, Dempster, and Zambrano) and you have the making of a nice team mixed with veterans and young talent, much like the Rays have this season. It all starts at the top with a new GM and revamped coaching staff. Ryne Sandberg, Gregg Maddux, and/or Bob Brenly should be involved with the Cubs in some way. Sandberg or Brenly managing would be a nice and welcome change while I think Maddux would be a great GM (if you are going to start over why not give him a shot?). I think the only coach you keep is Rudy Jaramillo because I have seen what he has done with Soto, Soriano, etc.
I just think it is time for a change because this is not a team, it is a group of individuals with no direction.

Moving on Up... and Down
- Zambrano is moving up to the rotation and will start Weds against the Pirates. Gorzelanny will be sent to the bullpen.
- The Cubs will have four lefties in their bullpen to start this week. The Cubs are expected to make another move though, calling up Andrew Cashner this week to replace Zambrano as the right-handed set-up guy in the bullpen. You can expect the Cubs to make room for Cashner by sending down James Russell or putting John Grabow on the DL with a "mysterious injury."
- Ryan Dempster deferred 3 million dollars of his money this offseason so they could sign Xavier Nady. A generous act by Dempster and it truly shows the kind of person he is.
- Aramis Ramirez, Tom Gorzelanny, Kosuke Fukudome, Ryan Theriot, and Derrek Lee are all being shopped by the Cubs according to sources. The Cubs are looking to upgrade at those positions as well as make room for other deserving players like Tyler Colvin. Three of the five listed do have no-trade clauses but MLB has proven that some players will waive that clause if the fit seems right. The Angels could have interest in Derrek Lee with their first baseman on the shelf until at least August. Lee would probably accept a trade to the west coast because he has family there and is comfortable with California.
The others could find fits at numerous places. I will keep you updated.

Back From Vacation....
Hi guys, just got back from vacation today. Here is the latest (or not new news) on the Cubs.
- Aramis is due back tomorrow. He is nursing a sore thumb.
- Z is heading back to the rotation (as long as he proves healthy after his hospital scare) and the Cubs could make Tom Gorzelanny available but have not done so yet. The Mets, Tigers, and Rangers all have interest.
- The Cubs plan on moving Starlin Castro into the #2 spot permanently while Colvin could see a lot more playing time.
- Wells could be moved to the pen when Zambrano comes back to the rotation.
- The Cubs still have interest in Mike Lowell.

Here Comes the Rumors...
My blog is having maintenance done to it which is the reason I have not been able to update it recently. So here is the latest Cubs Chatter-
- The Cubs have signed Bobby Howry to a contract. No word on the amount of the contract but Howry is expected to work in middle relief. I am not sure if Howry is the answer but it is an upgrade over some of the pitchers we have trotted out of the pen this season. I just don’t know if I am ready for another stint with Bobby Howry. I hope he proves me wrong because this pen needs work.
- Tom Gorzelanny’s X-rays on this hand came up negative. Tom was struck on the hand by a line drive last night and he is day to day and could maybe make his next start if the swelling goes down.
- CCO.com has a great prospect profile on Hak-Ju Lee. Go check it out, Starlin Castro and Hak-Ju Lee is the future middle infielders for the Chicago Cubs. Maybe as early as the start of the 2012 season.
- Despite Zambrano showing progress in the pen recently the Cubs are going to start to extend him and build up his stamina. He will assume the long relief position in the bullpen which is the next step to being inserted back into the rotation. Although Z says he will do whatever the team wants him to do and how he just wants to help the team. You can tell he is just not happy with the role. I expect Z to be inserted back in the rotation before June 1st.
- Caridad was placed on the 15 day DL with an “elbow injury.” The Cubs called up Jeff Stevens to take his place. It is likely Stevens will be sent back down once Bobby Howry joins the team.
- Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the Cubs would trade Derrek Lee if the opportunity presented itself. That thought may have changed since the Cubs have just rattled off 4 wins in a row. The Cubs currently do not have a 1st baseman in their farm system so getting a nice 1st baseman prospect back might be in order. The Rangers could use Lee and the Cubs have shown interest in Smoak, so there is a possible deal. I also heard this rumor which is interesting if anything. Carlos Pena for Derrek Lee straight across. There is only a 3.25 million difference in contracts with Lee getting paid more. Both could use a change of scenery. The Rays could look to get better defensively and the Cubs are looking for an impact left-handed bat to balance their lineup. Both have struggled but Lee looks like he maybe coming out of it while Pena still looks lost. I will keep you updated on this if this rumor has legs.
- The Cubs have contacted the Red Sox about Mike Lowell according to sources. Lowell recently asked for his release (or was about to). Lowell has lost out on playing time to Youklis, Ortiz, and Beltre. The Red Sox are willing to pay the majority of Lowell's contract just to get him to another team. I am told the trade could be Jeff Baker for Mike Lowell with the Red Sox paying around 10 million of the 12 million left on his contract. The Cubs could be looking for a veteran presence off the bench as well as a spot starter for Lee and Aram. If this deal does go through it could also be insurance in case Aram continues to scuffle or in fact his thumb is worst than we thought. I will keep you updated.

Another Rumor Round-Up...
Here is the latest addition with "Rumor Round-Up"-
- The Cubs are actively shopping Jeff Baker and Mike Fontenot for relief help but it looks like they have not bites as of yet. Jay Jackson and Casey Coleman could be on their way up to Chicago soon. Jackson has pitched in relief recently and Coleman has looked good as a starter. Look for both to come up in the next week or so if Caridad and Zambrano continue to scuffle.
- According to a couple of GMs around baseball, Carlos Zambrano's trade value is "less than 0." Stating he has not been an elite starter in 2 years and does not look like he is coming around to being one anytime soon. OUCH!
- Roy Oswalt maybe traded out of Houston in the coming months. The Cubs should have some interest but a deal is unlikely unless the Cubs overpay, plus what makes you think the Cubs will have a better record than the Astros?
- Jim Hendry gave Lou a "vote of confidence" this week. Saying he is the man to get this team out of the funk and into the playoffs. So anything short of making it to the post season, we have likely seen the last of the Jim Hendry Era in Chicago.
- If the Cubs continue to fall, look for them to become sellers at the deadline. It is rumored that players like Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee, Ted Lilly, Soriano, Fukudome, Theriot, and many others would be shopped for young up in coming prospects or young talent already in the ML. There has already been talk about maybe Ted Lilly, Aram, and/or Lee going to Texas who is looking for corner infielders and pitching. The Cubs could target Rangers top prospect Justin Smoak who is currently playing first base for the Rangers. The Cubs currently do not have a top prospect for first base so it would really help them to rebuild for the future.
- I will leave you today with a nice tidbit! It is no coincidence that Greg Maddux was to fill the role as assistant GM to Jim Hendry according to a source. This source says that it was Tom Ricketts idea to bring in Greg Maddux not Jimbos. Greg is basically being groomed for the GM job for the Chicago Cubs according to this source, which could actually be coming sooner rather than later.

Starlin Castro
I just want to say congratulations to Starlin Castro and his 6 RBI debut as a Chicago Cub. It is truly amazing how a 20 year old kid has so on his shoulders can deliver how he did last night. It is truly amazing and something the Cubs obviously needed.
Starlin should have started in the big leagues after Spring Training and if you have read my blog before you know how I felt when they started him in AA. But that was then and this is now.
I think all Cub fans can agree, this is going to be an exciting kid to watch!

Rumor Round-Up....
Here is a weekly thing I want to call "Rumor Round-Up." Here I will put down what I am hearing from TV, radio, Internet, and my personal sources on the Cubs rumor front. Lets get it started.
- CubbieCrib says that Gorzelanny and Baker head the list for trade candidates. He also says that they would trade both to acquire a late-inning reliever, then place Z back in the rotation. I am hearing that the Cubs and Astros are discussing a deal that would send Tom Gorzelanny and Micah Hoffpauir to the Astros for Matt Lindstrom. Lindstrom would provide them with a fireballer in the back of the pen, he also could fill in as a closer if Marmol is unavailable.
- According to my sources the Yankees have called the Cubs about the availability of Fukudome. The Yanks recently lost Curtis Granderson for at least a month and they need a replacement both offensively and defensively. All I know for sure is that the Yankees called the Cubs about Fukudome, more on this as it becomes available.
- Bruce Levine stated that Jim Hendry says Starlin Castro will be up with the Cubs sometime this season and even talked to Theriot about changing positions and working on his foot and glove work at 2nd base. A good sign!
- Caridad pitched a scoreless inning in AAA Iowa. He will get a couple of more innings of work before the Cubs bring him back to Chicago.
- Put this in your "WHAT?!?!?!" folder. According to a reliable source the Cubs and M's have discussed a Chone Figgins for Aramis Ramirez trade. If Aram is traded his 2012 option is vested which means the M's would be on the hook for 30 million over 2011 and 2012, not only that but they would also be on the hook for a portion of the 15 million he is owed this season. The Cubs would be on the hook for 36 million for 2010 through 2014. So the money is about even. All I can say is interesting and WHAT?!?!?

Quick Hits....
- Starlin Castro could be called up soon. They have scouts in AA evaluating him to see if he is ready for the big show. Bruce Levine said he would not be surprised if he is called up in May but a good sign he is on his way if Theriot starts taking grounders at 2nd. Many think he will get the call up to Iowa before he hits the bigs.

Moves Could Be Coming.....
- First rumored by Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs could decide to move Tom Gorzelanny for a relief pitcher but now David Kaplan said the Cubs are working on some "major trades." This could be to improve the middle infield some or more than likely an upgraded bullpen. Many rumor sites are reporting that a deal could involve Heath Bell. According to sources of mine I am hearing a the Cubs want both Heath Bell and Luke Gregerson and the Padres want Josh Vitters in any deal involving Bell but also want a pitching prospect in return. I am also hearing that the Cubs want to "pawn off" Ryan Theriot in the deal so the money swap is about even (only 1.4 million dollar difference). It should be noted that the Padres are 10-6 and might want to hold onto Bell until they decide if the are a contender to pretender. One thing for sure the trade and rumor talk has heated up recently. I will keep you updated.
- Ted Lilly will be activated today, no word yet on who will be sent to Iowa. You have to believe it will be Shark.

In Z Bullpen and Out of the Loop....
- Carlos Zambrano is officially in the Cubs bullpen. The Cubs struggling pen and Zambrano struggling in the rotation with his pitch count and cramps, it is not that bad of an idea. I think Zambrano as a reliever is interesting in that he will have new challenges but in the end I think you will see him do very well. I think Lou is looking at what Barry Zito went through and is trying the same thing on Z. Should be very interesting seeing a 18 million dollar set-up man.
- Braden Looper pitched for the Cubs but that is the closest he will come to becoming a Cub. Carrie Muskat said she does not expect Looper to sign with the Cubs.
- MLBTR has a interesting take on if the Cubs become sellers. I think if they become sellers they will not become full blown seller just like they said on MLBTR but I do expect them to shop guys like Fukudome, Nady, Tracy, Soriano, Grabow, Shark, Zambrano, Theriot, Fontenot, and Baker. I also assume they will listen to offers for Lilly, Lee, and Aram but only if they think they will not be back next season.
- Would the White Sox trade the Cubs Juan Pierre, Scott Linebrink, Mark Teahen, and Alex Rios for Soriano, Shark, Nady, and Ryan Theriot? The money really is not that far off, Cub players=98.6 million and White Sox players=91.5 million. Only 7.1 million difference. Both offenses are struggling and in the trade both teams are acquring players that are struggling and doing decent. I honestly think this trade is very fair and if Williams or Hendry is out there, get this trade done.

I also assume they will listen to offers for Lilly, Lee, and Aram but only if they think they will not be back next season.
- Would the White Sox trade the Cubs Juan Pierre, Scott Linebrink, Mark Teahen, and Alex Rios for Soriano, Shark, Nady, and Ryan Theriot? The money really is not that far off, Cub players=98.6 million and White Sox players=91.5 million. Only 7.1 million difference. Both offenses are struggling and in the trade both teams are acquring players that are struggling and doing decent. I honestly think this trade is very fair and if Williams or Hendry is out there, get this trade done.

This trade would make the Cubs a better balanced team with a better bench and bullpen. Of course this is just my thought and this is not even a rumor but hey, this is what you do when the Cubs are sucking....
On a side note, I think if the Cubs reach 20 loses before 10 wins.... Lou should be gone!
