Greene not coming to Cubs and other notes.

- Cubs officials said today that there is "no truth" the rumors circulation around the Padres' Greene. So rest assure that Greene will not be a Cub anytime soon.

- Soriano said he will be ready to return to the Chicago Cubs by the Flordia series which is July 24th. That is depending on how batting practice goes in Houston, if all goes well he could be with Iowa by Monday, and in the North side lineup on the 24th. This is good news for the Cubbies!

- The Cubs really want to land a reliever and a bat off the bench. Brian Fuentes is on top of a short list of relievers the Cubs really like. As far as the a bench player, I could see them looking at Casey Blake. Blake is batting .282 with 9 homers and 52 RBI in 301 ABs. He can play 3b, RF, LF, and 1st base. Basically another Derosa, which would be very valuable off the bench!

I'm wondering what your thoughts are regarding who the Cubs might bump from the bench if they were to pick up Blake? I'm not sure they want a RHH hitter replacing LHH Ward... I thought they'd target another lefty. Casey's '08 contract is also 6M+ .... does the prorated version of that fit?

thanks

Very good points WillyBilliams. As far as the contract I do not think they are too worried about that. They are in win now mode, but considering the sale of the Cubs is up in the air it might effect it a little bit.

Ward has a very valuable spot on this team and he will not get replaced, especially by a right handed hitter. I could see them trading a guy like Cedeno because he has not been hitting well of late plus he is out of options. His average is down to .269 and is looking lost out their. The only problem with that is Blake has not played 2nd base his entire career and only has 1 apperance at SS. So that might work.

One thing to keep in mind is that rosters expand September 1st to 40 players, and he would really help the Cubs rest some of their all stars.
