Finally an Update!

I want to apologize for the long delay in between updates but here is the latest-

- The Cubs will do all they can to lock up Adam Dunn this off-season to play first for the Cubs. Jim Hendry is said to have made Dunn his number 1 target.

- Don't think the impressive play of Blake DeWitt will hinder the Cubs upgrading at 2nd base for next season. The Cubs are deciding internally whether to keep DeWitt at 2nd base or have him a a super utility role and as the primary backups to 2nd and 3rd. Rumors are going around that they Cubs may try to trade for Brian Roberts, Brandon Phillips, Dan Uggla, or Ben Zobrist. There are also whispers that they could take another run at free agent Orlando Hudson or Omar Infante (who has a 2.5 million option for 2011).

- To make this an even better off-season it looks like management will take the approach I and so many others feel is the right way to go. The Cubs will keep there young core that includes Randy Wells, Carlos Marmol, Starlin Castro, Tyler Colvin, etc... and surround them with impact players like an Adam Dunn. They also will be looking to trade or out right release players who do not want to be in Chicago or do not fit the guidelines they are looking for. Which means players like Soriano, Grabow, Fukudome, Baker, and maybe even Zambrano will not be in Chicago Cubs blue next season in one way or another.

- Gordon Wittenmyer says that Fredi Gonzales has become the Cubs top candidate to fill the management job. He has some past with Hendry and could be a viable replacement but I do not see him as a top candidate by any means. I think regardless if the Cubs offer him the job he will be the next to manage the Braves. It has been speculated for some time now and there is no way he picks the Cubs over the Braves. I think it is Joe Girardi's job if he wants it, otherwise look at Ryne Sandberg to be the Cubs next manager.

- Jim has or is about to interview Pat Listach, Ryne Sandberg, Eric Wedge, Bob Brenly, Fredi Gonzales, Mike Quade, and rumored Joe Girardi. Jim would like to have his new manager hired before the organizational meetings which are after the World Series.

Until Next Time...

I really think the Cubs needs to look at Clint Robinson of the Royals organization for 1st and go after Greinke in the process. Send Carpenter, Watkins, Dolis and Flaherty to the Royals

There is no way that anyone will pick up Soriano in a trade and even though dumping him would be wise, they won't do it when they owe him as much as they do. So you can talk all you want about Soriano being gone next season, but I don't see it happening.

How much of an impact can Adam Dunn be? True the guy hits a tons of home runs and he takes walks, but his batting average is nothing special and his defense is horrible. One of the biggest problems the Cubs have had this season is their defense, and they target a guy who is known to carry his glove for no particular reason as the answer to the problems of this season? It makes no sense. I would rather see them bring in a guy with speed and a glove that can also hit. Crawford would be a much better pick up than Dunn.

I like Nady at 1st. He is doing a good job. With playing time, his bat will be back. So far he has looked good at 1b since DLee was sent packing!

I agree with anonymous #3. Even though with Lee,Lilly,Theriot,Howry
and Tracy gone thats only 30 million. Next year raises Byrd 2.5 mil.Dempster 1.5 mil. Grabow 2.1 mil. Fukudome .5 mil. thats over 6 mil. Then all of these players will get raises. Marmol, Marshall, Baker, Gorzelany, Wells, Colvin, Soto, Castro, Cashner and some i probably missed. That will be another 15 mil. So if cubs don't trade anyone thats only 9 mil. left to spend. And That doesn't buy much.

Last year GUYER was not in the cubs top 30 prospects. Adduci, Fuld, and Burke were. GUYER batted .347 and had 23 SB's and was caught only 2 times. This year he batted .344 had 30 SB's and was caught only 3 times. If he doesn't make the top 10 this year Baseball America can kiss my you know what.
HE IS FOR REAL.

I have defended Hendry up until this point, and there are a couple moves he made that make it hard to defend him, but if his heart is set on chasing Dunn, then I will have to jump the picket line and call for his head. Our roster is already bogged down by Soriano. We don't need another high strikeout batter even if he has power, a high OBP through walks, and a lefty bat. And his glove sucks even if its at 1B.

Find a stop gap like resigning Nady. Or maybe go after the 2B targets you listed and move DeWitt to 1B if he isn't part of a deal to bring in the 2B. Then go after a A Gonz, Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols. By then Rammy, Fuku, and Silva's money is off the books.

I don't deal Z just to deal him this off season. Either the other team takes on all his money, even if it means getting nothing back, or no deal. With the glimpse we have seen this past month, I'm willing to give him one more shot. If we are eating the money anyway, might as well have it while he is doing something for us, even if it is minimal production. With the Cubs being able to force him to go anger management, he knows that if he acts up, they can always find a way to keep him away from the team even if they can't deal him.

If anything, and assuming the Ricketts have some money for Hendry to spend, I say we splash it all on SP. Go after an Oswalt or a Lee. And add Lilly on top of that. Then we can deal a Gorz, Wells, Shark in a package to a rebuilding team like the O's for Roberts or Marlins for Uggla. Its fair to say those arms can provide middle of the rotation stability in terms of being under team control for a few years while only having to fill one or two rotation spots with their top prospect arms to gradually grow into. - Joe
