The Latest Cubs Talk from Spring Training
- Dale Sveum is committed to Bryan LaHair at 1st base but Anthony Rizzo could still push LaHair.
- John Gaub is hoping to make the Cubs team out of Spring Training. The Cubs could go with three lefties in pen which could help Gaub chances.
- Ian Stewart will not platoon with anyone. In fact Dale Sveum does not believe in platoon situations but will get everyone a chance to play.
- Sveum believes you can stick with one lineup and he plans to do so with minor changes to get players days off and playing time.
- Although Sveum has not announced an official lineup it looks like David DeJesus will be the lead-off or get every chance to keep the spot.
- Dale also said LaHair would likely bat clean-up although Soriano could find himself in that spot as well. It would then make sense to put Castro in the 3 or 4 spot in the lineup.
- Starlin Castro reported to camp today.
- Bleacher Nation has the latest on Starlin Castro found here.
- Tim Sheridan has more great pics from the Boys of Spring found here.
- Cubs Den has a good write up on Junior Lake’s future which is found here.
- Please check out CubbiesCrib as the lay out player profiles on every player on the 40-man roster. It takes a lot of work for something like this so please check them out!

BOY! Do We have Some Updates!
- The Cubs sent right-handed reliever Chris Carpenter and a PTBNL for Theo Epstein and a PTBNL.
- The PTBNL will be announced no later than April 15th.
- Theo and Ben Cherington have decided on a list of players to choose from.
- The PTBNL are not significant in any way according to sources.
- No money will be switching hands.
- Bud Selig had no hand in the decision. This agreement was agreed upon by the GMs and that is it.
- McLeod and Hoyer's compensation should be decided very soon but will not be significant according to sources.
- The Padres will likely received a low A ball player. No one on the 40 man roster or on the 25 best Cubs prospects list.
- In my honest opinion this is close to the compensation the Red Sox should receive for a top notch GM. I am saddened to see Carpenter go because I think he is going to be a good late inning guy but relievers are a dime a dozen. I feel better giving him up rather than Dolis or McNutt.
- Jeff Samardzija want to start and did not like the report of the possibility of heading back to the pen. I just don't see room for him in the rotation and with Carpenter gone I think he maybe the guy going to the pen.
- Blake DeWitt accepted his assignment to AAA and will have a chance to make the team out of Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.
- Marmol came to ST 15 pounds lighter and with one less pitch. The Cubs coaching staff told him to lose the cut fastball. Finally someone said it!
- BleacherNation has a great breakdown on how much the Cubs will have to spend on the draft found here.
- The Cubs signed Nate Robertson to a minor league deal. Just adding to the rotation depth.
- The Cubs are expected to discuss an extension with Garza but that does not mean he will be with the team before the deadline.
- Jorge Soler has not been declared a free agent.
- James Russell hopes and so does the Cubs that he will fill the Sean Marshall role in the bullpen.
- The starting rotation for the Cubs will be as followed by Opening Day (unless a trade happens). Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Paul Maholm, Chris Volstad, and Travis Wood. I am just calling my shot.
- Add the Astros to the list of teams that like Jorge Soler.

Cubs Talk: Pitchers and Catchers Edition
- Blake DeWitt cleared waivers and was sent to AAA yesterday. I thought he has an OK chance to be claimed with interest from several clubs but obviously no one is "that'' interested.
- The Phillies are now considered long shots to land Soler. I am hearing the Yankees are the most aggressive besides the Cubs.
- The Theo compensation issue should be completed by Monday according to numerous baseball officials. Selig has spent a ton of time on the issue and my guess neither the Cubs or Red Sox will like the decision. An established player like Jeff Baker or young prospects like Dolis or Golden could be disappointments for both teams if considered compensation by Bud.
- Bryan LaHair is named the Player of the Year in the Winter League. The guy can just rake and I really hope he does the same in Chicago this year.
- The Marlins have dropped out of the Soler sweepstakes and the Orioles have jumped in.
- Chicago Cubs Online has a great look back on the Cubs offseason. Which you can find
here.
- Tom Loxas of Cubs den does a nice 5 question interview with Baseball Tonight's Chris Singleton. Which you can find Here.
- Please check Hot Stove Cubbies updated "Hot Stove Friends" that includes Bleacher Nation, Cubs Den, and The Boys of Spring. It is located half way down the page on the right hand side column.

Soler has (NOT) Signed, Theo, Ricketts, and More..
- It has been a whirl wind of reports about Jorge Soler. First it was reported by several websites, newspapers, twitter accounts, and blogs that Jorge Soler has reached an agreement with the Cubs on a 4 year deal worth $27M. Then reports started coming out that Soler is not a free agent because he has yet to establish residency and if the Cubs did “sign” him they could be fined by the MLB and be in trouble with the Federal Government. So as of right now the Cubs remain in the mix for Soler along with the Marlins, White Sox, Phillies, Jays, and Yankees.
- I have heard from my sources that the Cubs and Soler have the parameters of a deal in place but not official deal. The source stated Soler and the Cubs have a handshake agreement but cannot come out with the deal because of many reasons including Soler not officially a free agent and how the signing could affect the Theo compensation issue.
- Want the most information on Soler down to the last detail please check out BleacherNation.
- Speaking of the Theo compensation; both the Red Sox and Cubs submitted arguments to the commissioner’s office and a decision could finally be announced this week.
- Theo Epstein and Tom Ricketts made the top 100 most Powerful People in Chicago. Epstein landed in 48th place with Ricketts taking the 30thspot.
- The White Sox finally go their man! Former Cubs Fukudome signed with the Southsiders on a one year deal.
- Marlon Byrd, Steve Clevenger, Jason Jaramillo, Trey McNutt, Casey Weather, Chris Carpenter, Joe Mather, and Dave Sappelt have all reported to camp early.
- The Cubs may sign Ramon Ortiz to a minor league deal. There are so many other pitchers looking for work like Scott Kazmir, Sergio Mitre, Ross Ohlendorf, Tim Wakefield, Brandon Webb, and Chris Young which is why the Ramon Ortiz possible minor league signing confuses me.
- Still cannot believe the A’s signed Cespedes! But good news is he has a no-trade clause and will be a free agent by the time he is 30 so the Cubs could in fact still get there man (if he does well).
- The Cubs maybe working a long term deal with Matt Garza but it will not include a no-trade which means even if he does sign a long term deal he could still be traded this season.
- The Cubs are holding off on trading Marlon Byrd until Spring Training to first see how Brett Jackson does. The only way the Cubs trade Byrd soon is if their blown away by an offer.

Cubs Lose One Cuban... May Land Another
- One source told me the Cubs offered Cespedes a longer deal with less salary. Something like a 7 year deal worth $30-35M.
- The reason the Cubs felt like they were out of the race because the Marlins offered 6 years $35M and I am assuming knowing the A's offer of 4 years $36M was just too much for them.
- The Cubs have now turned all their attention to 19 year old outfielder Jorge Soler. Many feel that the Cubs could pay Soler upwards of $30M over several years which others are unlikely to match. Another reason the Cubs have a leg up is because they signed 2 of his teammates already this offseason.
- Want to know more about Jorge Soler check him out here http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/6880/jorge-soler

Cubbie Quick Hits....
- If you have not heard the Marlins did make an offer to Yoenis Cespedes before he went back to the Dominican. It was first reported at 6 years over $40M but now sources and sites like BleacherNation.com are reporting the deal is worth 6 years but lower than $40M. The Fish are banking on Cespedes really wanting to play in Miami which is a big gamble.
- I think the Cubs could easily top the deal and think they will ultimately offer Cespedes a 6 year deal with an option and incentives guaranteeing him $50M. Whether he takes it is another story.
- Jon Heyman says the Cubs could have interest in Edgar Renteria to back up shortstop next season. Makes sense on a minor league deal but nothing more.
- The Chicago Cubs are not done working on this year's team according to sources. Theo and Co. are still working on dealing Matt Garza and Alfonso Soriano while gaging suitors and interest for Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol, Geovany Soto, Randy Wells, and Marlon Byrd. My source told it could be a very busy Spring Training for the Cubs with potential moves on the horizon. Another team is just one injury away from overpaying for a player like Garza, Marmol, Byrd, etc..

Cubs Make Some Waves, Typhoons Maybe Coming
- I talked to one of my sources that said there is a good chance DeWitt gets claimed because numerous teams have interest such as the White Sox and Mariners.
- Tom Loxas on Twitter says the a name being thrown around in the compensation talks is Josh Vitters. I say WOW considering most thing it is a low level prospect. But having said that I do think Vitters is worth Theo and if they announced it I would be disappointed but of course I would accept it.
- Yoenis Cespedes is set to visit the Marlins Weds. but a source tells me he has met with the Cubs front office more than twice and he may have even talked to Tom Ricketts as well.
- Soler maybe harder to get than originally thought. More than 10 team are expected to fight for the young outfielder.
- Bleacher Nation throws out Junior Lake as possible compensation for Theo. I will add Chris Carpenter to that list as well. The fact that Lake, Carpenter, and Vitters have all been rumored as possible compensation has to tell you the Red Sox will get more than the Cubs thought they would.
- A source tells me that if the Cubs land Cespedes it will not be because the Cubs offered him the most money rather that he wants to be a Cub and they can give him intangible things that the Marlins cannot give him. He then goes on to say if it is purely about money then he will go to Miami because the fish will not be out spent on Cespedes.

Concepcion Signs with Cubs and Other Rumors...
- I have to toot my own horn here because a lot of people love to point out when you are wrong so in turn I love to point out when I am right. I was first to report the Cubs mad3 an aggressive offer to Concepcion which you can find here and the first to report it being down to only three teams including the Cubs that Concepcion was to pick from which is found here.
- This deal does in fact make it more appealing for Soler and Cespedes to come to Chicago. One thing is for sure; if the Cubs can land Soler and Cepedes next this would be the greatest offseason I have ever seen in my life-time for the Cubs.
- The Nationals are looking to trade lefty Pitcher John Lannan because of the recent acquisition of Edwin Jackson. Lannan is only 27 years old and a lefty making $5M this coming season. How does this effect the Cubs? Well my source said the Cubs and Nationals talks about a possible Byrd for Lannan have heated up and then added that the Cubs would likely have to include a top 25 prospect along with Byrd to make the deal happen. Lannan is making $5M next season and Byrd will be making $6.5M. You can see Lannan's stats here.
- The Cubs are still very much interested in Adrian Cardenas who was designated for assignment recently. It it unsure if the Cubs would trade for Cardenas but I fully expect a claim to be placed if the A's go that route.

Who Talking, Who is Walking, and Who is Doing Both...
- Matt Garza’s arbitration hearing is set for Friday which is really soon for a reason. The Cubs want to get the amount settled fast so they have the option to deal him because no team right now is interested in acquiring Garza. The reason is simple; they do not know the amount he will make next season. The Cubs submitted the bid of $7.95M while Garza asked for a whopping $12.5M. In a way you kind of hope they go to the hearing because I see it no way possible that Garza will be awarded a 7 million dollar bonus from last year to this year.
- The Tribune is reporting that the Ricketts family and key staff members are expected to travel to their new site in the Dominican Republic. Brett at Bleacher Nation has a great take on Ricketts trip to the Dominican and other possible reasons he is making the trip down there.
- Jim Hendry has falling pretty far by becoming a special assistant to Brian Cashman and the NY Yankees. The Yankees fit Hendry’s mold of signing players to big contracts with NTC on the later part of their career. BUUURRRNNNN!
- Levine spewed some knowledge over the past couple of days and had some interesting tidbits-
------- The Cubs are in need of middle infield help and are looking for a utility infielder. There are currently 4 non-roster invitees that could fit that mold with Alfredo Amezaga, Edgar Gonzalez, Bobby Scales, and Matt Tolbert.
------- Levine also says the Cubs are in search of a back-up catcher but again they have Welington Castillo or Steve Clevenger as a backup for Soto plus non-roster invite Jason Jaramillo could fit the bill.
------- Bruce does not see Soriano as a part-time player. He will either be playing LF for the Cubs or being a DH for an American League team or being outright released.
------- Levine does not see the Red Sox getting a significant player in return for Theo Epstein.
------- The Cubs are concentrating solely on Cespedes and Soler and Levine things Soler fits the Cubs better and I agree. Although I still want both!
------- Theo and Co. are going with Jeff Baker as the backup first baseman for the Cubs according to Levine. There are still whispers that Dlee could make his way back to the north side.
- The Cubs and A’s are interested in signing Todd Coffey. I bet both are only interested in a minor league deal.
- Rosenthal says the Cubs had interest in signing Chad Qualls before the Phillies signed him.
- Bud Selig has said he has not received written arguments from the Cubs or Red Sox on the compensation case which clearly indicates nothing is close to being done.

Cubs Release Spring Training Invites
9 pitchers-
Marco Carrillo
Manny Corpas
Jay Jackson
Rodrigo Lopez
Trey McNutt
Blake Parker
Dae-Eun Rhee
Trever Miller
Chris Rusin
3 catchers-
Michael Brenly
Jason Jaramillo
Blake Lalli
5 infielders-
Alfredo Amezaga
Edgar Gonzalez
Jonathan Mota
Bobby Scales
Matt Tolbert
4 outfielders-
Jim Adduci
Jae-Hoon Ha
Brett Jackson
Joe Mather
No one really surprising on this list but the list is somewhat impressive compared to most years. I think the infielders have the best chance to break camp with the Cubs along with some relief pitching. I think Brett Jackson has a 50/50 chance to break the camp with the Cubs and the rest have worse odds than that. Out of the 21 players I think (besides Jackson) Matt Tolbert, Alfredo Amezaga, Manny Corpas, and Jason Jaramillo have the best chance to break camp with the Cubs.
Some guys to watch is Jae-Hoon Ha, Blake Parker, Dae-Eun Rhee, and Trey McNutt. All could really surprise in Spring Training and give you a taste of the future.
Seeing this release gets me giddy because it means baseball is right around the corner!
