- The Cubs traded Andres Blanco to the Rangers for a PTBNL. My question is why? A switch hitter, with speed, can play all over the infield, and has a plus glove should be valued not traded. If the Cubs were looking to deal an infielder for a PTBNL they have one named Jeff Baker. Blanco is more valuable to the Cubs than Baker is, plain and simple.
- The Cubs got to keep Mike Parisi because he was sent back to St. Louis but since he was outrighted before he had the choice to be a Cardinal or be a free agent. He chose free agency and was sent to AAA Iowa.
- With Tyler Colvin looking everyday like the real thing. It makes me wonder, if he continues to hit does he replace Fukudome in RF? I say yes!

Seven Gone with Pitching Set....
- The Cubs cut seven players from their roster today bring it down to 33 players. The players cut are James Adduci, Jeff Gray, John Gaub, Marcos Mateo, Darwin Barney, Robinson Chirinos, and Bobby Scales.
- James Russell will be with the Cubs to start the season, he will join a pretty young and inexperience pen.
- The Cubs set their starting rotation today. Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, Carlos Silva, and Tom Gorzelanny.
-The Cubs will go with Marmol, Marshall, Grabow, Caridad, Berg, Shark, and Russell for their bullpen.
- Mike Parisi will be offered back to St. Louis because he did not make the roster.
- Here is something in the interesting column. I heard from a source close to Jim Hendry that earlier this offseason the Cubs and Yankees almost made a trade that would have sent Fukudome, Samardzija, and a type A prospect for Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher but talk that Fukudome would invoke his no-trade clause killed the possible trade.

One Week Left.....
With one week left and on the eve of the Cubs big decisions we have some good notes from ST-
- It appears Tyler Colvin will make the big league club out of ST but Lou says he will need to get consistent ABs. That means he will likely split time with Byrd and Fukudome or if anyone struggles early because the guys can hit!
- Aram is getting better and hit a homer yesterday and should see action at 3rd base very soon.
- Nady played the outfield yesterday. It seems he might play the outfield only once in a while in April.
- The Cubs will make a decision on their rotation tomorrow and will likely cut the roster down to 30. The club will also make a decision on Tracy or Millar very soon.
- Russell will likely make the team out of camp which will likely have either Gorzo or Marshall go to the rotation.
Until Next Time...
Projections coming soon!!!!!

New From Cubs Camp....
- Lou announced yesterday that rookie right-hander Justin Berg make the pitching staff to start the season.
- He said John Gaub, James Russell, and Marcos Mateo will battle out for a lefty specialist while Mike Parisi is also battling for a spot. Gaub or Russell should get a spot.
- The Cubs will have either Colvin or Fuld as their 5th outfielder this Spring. If it is not Colvin, what is the purpose of hitting well in ST then?
- Millar and Tracy will battle it out but it looks like Millar may be a better fit because of his clubhouse leadership qualities.
- The Cubs will decide on the rotation on March 24th. The leaders for the 4th and 5th spots are Gorzelanny and Silva. Interesting picks...
- After Monday's game the Cubs management will have a meeting in order to figure out final roster spots and also any potential trades as well as options for their 40 man roster.

2010 Season a Make or Break??
This article from MLBTR.com really got me thinking about the Cubs future.
If in fact the Cubs do have a disappointing Season, I can in fact see Ricketts letting players like Derrek Lee and Ted Lilly go. Not to mention if the Cubs are quickly out of contention by the trade deadline they could send other high priced players like Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, and Fukudome to new teams as well. Of course there are hurdles of no trade-clauses that all but Dempster possess. There is also the amount of money left on all their contracts. Players like Lilly or Lee would not be that big on an issue to be traded since they are in a contract year. But players like Soriano (owed 90 million), Aram (potentially 46 million), Zambrano (73 million), and Fukudome (26.5 million) have bigger problems because of their bloated contracts. Each of these Cubs could help their cause by putting up big numbers and have a contender want to trade for them. Although we did see Alex Rios get traded and his entire contract along with Jake Peavy who both did not have the best numbers or contracts when they were traded.
The Cubs also could unload players that might not help them in the future like Theriot, Fontenot, Grabow, Nady, or even Byrd. The point of all this would be to trade all these players for young talent or as a salary purge for the Cubs.
The Cubs need to go into this season with only two options. Stay in the hunt all year and get better at the deadline or be a bad baseball team and out of contention before the trade deadline and sell to the players to the highest bidder. Nothing in between!
One benefit with rebuilding is you can still add free agents for 2011 that can help you. One big name that would be nice to build a team around is Carl Crawford or Joe Mauer (likely to sign with the Twins) and in the following year players like Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez, Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, Robinson Cano, Grady Sizemore, and Matt Cain. The Cubs are likely not to get any of those players with contracts they currently have on the team.
To me if the Cubs do fail to do anything in the first couple of months Ricketts needs to address what this team needs, which would be to start over. That means a new GM, Manager, Pitching Coach, coaching staff, and players. Here is what they do-
GM- Steve Stone/Greg Maddux- Steve was ran off because of his comments that I labeled as "the truth hurts." Ricketts would do the Cubs a favor by appointing Steve Stone as a GM. Ricketts also could appoint a guy who knows baseball in Greg Maddux even though he may do better as a coach on the bench.
Manager- Ryne Sandberg- No one can argue with this. He is being groomed for the job and has done a great job in the Cubs minor league season. He should be the Cubs manager in 2011 regardless if they are rebuilding or not.
Pitching Coach- Greg Maddux/Rick Sutcliffe (if Maddux becomes GM)- Cannot get any better than that.
Bench Coach- Mark Grace- Great baseball guy who needs to come back to Chicago.
Hitting Coach- Rudy Jaramillo- The guy is the best in the game.
First Base Coach/Fielding Coach- Shawn Dunston- Love the guy
Third Base Coach- Mike Quade - Has done a great job for the Cubs.
Bullpen Coach- Turk Wendell- Loved this guy in the 90's and watched him pitch in Iowa. Would be an ideal bullpen coach.
Coach- Trenidad Hubbard- Currently in the Rockies organization as a coordinator. Would make a good outfield instructor and coach for the Cubs.
2011 Lineup-
1. Hak-Ju Lee 2b
2. Starlin Castro SS
3. Aramis Ramirez 3b
4. Carl Crawford (2011 free agent) RF
5. Alfonso Soriano LF
6. Tyler Colvin CF
7. Josh Vitters 1st
8. Geovany Soto C
Bench-
Darwin Barney IF
Koyie Hill C
Marlon Byrd OF
Brad Snyder OF
Ty Wigginton (2011 free agent) IF
Rotation-
1. Carlos Zambrano
2. Ryan Dempster
3. Randy Wells
4. Casey Coleman
5. Dae-Eun Rhee
Bullpen-
Marmol CL
After that who knows?????
It is unlikely that the Cubs would be able to trade Soriano and Zambrano with the amount of money they have on their contracts and both have no trade clauses. Dempster is unlikely to be traded because his contract is actually not that bad and has done a lot for the Cubs. Aram on the other hand will NOT walk away from a guaranteed 14.6 million dollar paycheck for next season. Not when Chone Figgins only go paid 8 million a year and Beltre 9 million. The Cubs will let Derrek Lee, Xavier Nady, and Ted Lilly walk and they will trade players like Mike Fontenot, Jeff Samardzija, Fukudome, Grabow, and Ryan Theriot to save cash and get some decent prospects in return. They would then put the money they are saving into a young, speedy, defensive minded, lefty bat in Carl Crawford. A guy they can really build around after the 2011 season. They also pick up Ty Wigginton who can play all over the infield and the corner spots in the outfield for a cheap price.
With the team above the Cubs have a nice veteran core with good young up and comers that could actually compete in 2011. Of course this is all speculation and could be worth nothing if they win the World Series in 2010.

Notes and Rumors from Cubland.....
- According to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com the Cubs and D'backs are interested in right-hander Boof Bonser. Bonser is out of options and would have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors. It is interesting tha the Cubs would like Boof considering they already have Silva who has actually thrown the ball better than Bonser.
- The Cubs made more cuts today sending Blake Parker, Jeff Stevens, and Welington Castillo to AAA Iowa. They also sent Casey Coleman, Andrew Cashner, Thomas Diamond, JR Mathes, and Bryan LaHair to minor league camp. The roster is now down to 42 players. I was surprised Coleman was sent down, I just do not know why they Cubs did not give him a chance to win the starting job. I was also surprised at Diamond, Stevens, and Casher were sent down so early.
- Angel Guzman is out for the season, he is having his 3rd surgury.
- Levine said Berg and Caridad are leaders for a setup role in the pen.
- Jeff Gray threw a simulated game today but will either start the year on the DL or start in the minors. He has one option left.
- Lilly is still on track to make an appearance in a Cactus game.
On a side note, I just want everyone to know I will be doing my 2010 projections the last week of Spring Training so I know what the roster will shape out to be, so look for that.

Some More From Spring...
- Lou said he is 80% sure Theriot will leadoff and Fukudome will hit in the two hole.
- Kevin Millar and Jeff Baker will receive playing time in LF over the next few days.
- If the season started today Tyler Colvin and Kevin Millar will make the team.
- Lee and Aram will not return to the lineup until Thursday to get added rest for their injuries.
- Andres Blanco is expected to return by the weekend. If he come back healthy I would have to think seriously about replacing Baker with Blanco.
- Lilly is close to facing hitters and then if that goes well he will pitch in a cactus league game.
- Jeff Gray will face live hitters by the end of the week. I hope he comes back healthy because he would add more depth to the pen.
- Carlos Silva is still in the running for the 5th starter position. I would not mind seeing if he could be a set-up man, but after today outing he looks like a starter.
- Mike Fontenot will likely be the starting 2nd baseman to start the season.
- I honestly believe that Casey Coleman should be one of our starters. A young kid with good control and movement is hard to find even though we already have a player like that named Randy Wells.

Quick Hits....
- The Cubs cut 9 players today as expected. They sent Mitch Atkins to AAA Iowa and David Patton to AA Tenn. They assigned Steve Clevenger, Blake Lalli, Jeff Kennard, Josh Vitters, Matt Camp, Brett Jackson, and Vince Perkins to minor league camp. No shocker there, it is too bad they sent Vitters and Jackson so early, I really enjoyed watching them.
- Nick Cafardo said that Kerry Wood is a fit for the Twins if they eat most of his contract for this season but the Cubs also have some interest as well he says.
- Starlin Castro is ready?!?!?!? Aramis and others think so........ Thanks to Cubbies Crib for the info!

Some of This... Some of That...
- Aram left the game today against the Reds with a right tricep soreness. He is listed day-to-day and the Cubs are not worried.
- Darwin Barney could play his way on this team because he is a "Lou kind of player."
- Hak-Ju Lee made his Spring Training debut today and went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI. I calling it right now that Hak-Ju Lee and Starlin Castro will make up our middle infield no later than 2012. Both show smooth fielding skills and can handle the bat. I have not been this excited for two prospects in my whole life as a Cubs fan.
- Lilly is ahead of schedule now and throwing off the mound every 3-4 days. He is even expected to pitch in a ST game.
- Cuts maybe coming after Sundays game.
- It is now said that it would be a "surprise" if Tyler Colvin does not make the 25 man roster out of ST. He has made a great impression on Lou and his staff not only with his bat but his glove. He is a left handed hitting outfielder with power that can play all three outfield positions which puts him head and shoulders above the rest.
- This is for fun; here is my " All Cubs Prospect Starting Lineup" for this Season-
1. Hak-Ju Lee 2b
2. Starlin Castro SS
3. Tyler Colvin RF
4. Josh Vitters 1st
5. Ryan Flaherty 3b
6. Geovany Soto C
7. Bret Jackson CF
8. Kyler Burke LF
Just Missed- DJ LeMahieu, Logan Watkins, and Darwin Baily. I would love to go into 2013 with this lineup except exchange Flaherty with Aramis and Kyler Burke with Carl Crawford (free agent after this season). A young inexpensive team to build on!

Nady Has Bad News.... Bradley is a BAD MAN
- Xavier Nady continues the bad injury news that has plagued the Cubs this Spring. It is said today that Nady will not he able to throw at full strength until June but that he will play with his arm at less than 100%. Nady is currently throwing at 120 feet. With Nady's arm issues the Cubs are more inclined to give Sam Fuld a roster spot over Micah Hoffpauir according to the Tribune.
My question is why in the HELL would they even consider Micah Hoffpauir on this team when guys like Kevin Millar and Chad Tracy are more deserving. To be honest I am not fully sure that Fuld belongs on this team either with the dynamic play of Brad Snyder and Tyler Colvin so far this Spring. The Tribune needs to get a clue!
I also think if Nady is not able to play the outfield like he should they need to place him on the DL to start the year and give the fourth outfielder job to someone else until he is able.
- Here are the latest links from the Bradley Saga that still haunts the Cubs.

Hey Bradley look in the mirror link
I will not beat a dead horse here but let me say Skip Bayless hit the nail on the head. I think every Cub fan does not care what color you are, just preform. He did not so he took the heat that he could not handle. Bradley is Bradley no matter what city he is in, watch the same issues will arise in Seattle, I guarantee it!
