Wood activated today!

Thanks to cubs.com-

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Kerry Wood from the 60-day disabled list after optioning right-handed pitcher Rocky Cherry to Triple-A Iowa following yesterday's game vs. Philadelphia. In addition, right-handed pitcher Angel Guzman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Wood, 30, has gone 1-1 with a 1.04 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) in eight rehabilitation outings with Rookie League Mesa, Single-A Peoria and Double-A Tennessee from July 14-31. He began the 2007 campaign on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis and was transferred to the 60-day disabled list May 15.
Selected by the Cubs in the first round of the 1995 draft (fourth player chosen), Wood has compiled a 71-56 career record with a 3.68 ERA (461 ER/1128.2 IP) in 189 (178 starts). His 1,299 strikeouts rank fifth in Cubs history, just six behind Greg Maddux who is fourth with 1,305 strikeouts.
Wood owns a 2.25 ERA (3 ER/12.0 IP) and an 0-1 record in 11 career relief appearances, all coming in 2005. His most recent Major League action was on June 6, 2006 at Houston in a 4-1 loss in which he allowed four runs (one earned) in 3.2 innings of work.
Cherry, 27, is 1-1 with a 3.00 (5 ER/15.0 IP) in 12 relief appearances for Chicago this season. The rookie has gone 2-0 with four saves and a 5.55 ERA (22 ER/35.2 IP) in 30 games (one start) with Iowa.
Guzman, 25, landed on the 15-day disabled list June 6, retroactive to June 2, with a strained right elbow. He is 0-1 with a 3.56 ERA (12 ER/30.1 IP) in 12 games (three starts) for the Cubs this season.

Blanco has set back, Wood is strong in outing

Thanks to rotoworld-

Henry Blanco suffered a setback while rehabbing with Single-A Peoria on Sunday."I'm not ready, but we'll see how it is in a couple of days,'' Blanco said. ''It's getting better. Let's hope it's nothing serious.'' Blanco will be shutdown for a few days to let pain in his shoulder dissipate. It looks like he won't return from the disabled list until mid-August at the earliest.

Thanks to cubs.com-

CHICAGO -- Kerry Wood threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Double-A Tennessee in what was expected to be his final Minor League tuneup before the right-hander is added to the Chicago Cubs' bullpen.
If Wood, who has been battling shoulder injuries since 2005, feels good on Wednesday, he could be activated as early as Thursday.
The right-hander entered Tuesday's game against West Tenn with one out in the seventh, and walked the first batter he faced. Wood then struck out Rene Rivera and got Christopher Minaker to popup.
In the West Tenn eighth, Wood got the first two batters to ground out to the third baseman, and then Charlton Jimerson popped up to end the inning. Wood threw 24 pitches, 15 for strikes. Tennessee won, 5-2.
"Roles can change," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Tuesday, "but I'll use him in the middle. We'll build up some stamina, build up some strength. He hasn't been on the mound for a long long time in a Major League game. We have to get him acclimated first and foremost. We have to build some stamina for him. The middle is the best place to do that."
Wood began his career as a starter, but was very effective pitching in relief in 2005. He compiled a 2.25 ERA in 11 relief appearances, striking out 17 over 12 innings before his shoulder forced him to shut it down. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder in late August that year, and has been trying to come back ever since.
The right-hander, who struck out 20 in his fifth big league start in 1998, is hoping to make a successful switch to setup pitcher.
"No. 1, he's as good a guy as we've ever had here," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said of Wood. "He's very beloved by his teammates, a team guy. I've watched this guy pitch for 10 years, and in a lot of pain some times and a lot of discomfort. I don't think there's anybody we've had who the guys in the clubhouse or the people in the front office want to come back more than him.
"I see a different bounce in his step than I have the last couple years," Hendry said. "I think he feels good about his chances. When you're throwing a lot of strikes like he is and the next day recovery time is really good -- tonight's the last hurdle for him. If he can throw more than one inning tonight and feel good [Wednesday], we'll look at activating him on Thursday and no later than Friday."
Wood did pitch this spring, but had to stop because of discomfort and tendinitis in his shoulder. There was a point in his rehab when he thought he'd have to undergo another operation.
"I think he felt a sense of desperation that if it doesn't work this time, then I have to regroup and decide where my future is going," Hendry said of Wood. "At 30 years old, it'd be a shame if he didn't have more years in him."
The Cubs did not pursue another reliever at the trading deadline because they were confident Wood can come back and help in the final two months of the season. This could be the beginning of a new career as a closer.
"If Woody's healthy, there's no question he'll get people out," Hendry said. "Whether that starts out in the sixth or seventh [innings] and moves to later, who knows? It'll take care of itself."

PIE NOT GOING ANYWHERE

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/07/hendry-felix-pi.html

General manager Jim Hendry put an end to speculation that the Cubs would deal their top prospect, telling reporters before Monday's game against Philadelphia that he has no intention of dealing Pie. "Felix Pie has never been talked about," Hendry said. "He's not going anywhere in any deal. There will be no trade of Felix Pie to anyone." Hendry was referring to speculation that Pie would be dealt to Texas in a package deal. He said he has not spoken to Texas general manager Jon Daniels about a trade. Cubs manager Lou Piniella said he's OK with the roster he has. "We're comfortable with what we have," he said.

Could Willis Come Back to the Cubs?? Cubs not to make a trade at deadline?

This according to MLBtraderumors.com-

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus has an interesting note in today's Rumor Mill:

"The Cubs also still covet Dontrelle Willis as "the one that got away" and--despite his not being on the market--Willis is one player the Cubs could get if Larry Beinfest suddenly changes his mind about that. Adding Felix Pie to Jacque Jones and Donald Veal would get it done, while not adding to the Cubs payroll."

Jim Hendry already tried to patch up one of the all-time classic Cub mistakes by signing Greg Maddux before the 2004 season. At least that departure didn't happen under Hendry's watch.
Back in March of 2002, Hendry traded Ryan Jorgensen, Jose Cueto, Julian Tavarez, and Willis to the Marlins for Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca.

Jones, while hitting better of late, probably would not be missed by the Cubs. He's still only slugging .382 in July. Veal was the Cubs' best pitching prospect heading into the season but has taken a step backward in Double A. Veal has been control problems, though his arm has been described as "electric." Lefty starters who can touch 95 can be hard to find.

Pie, though, would be the gem of the deal and the player with the best shot at stardom. Literally - BP gives him a 30-40% chance at becoming a star player. He struggled mightily in his first 139 ABs with the Cubs, but he now owns Triple A pitching. He should be the Cubs' starting center fielder for the next six years at least. Trading him for the declining Willis would create another "one that got away" situation, which seems perfectly Cub-like. Most likely nothing happens in the next two days, but we might revisit this rumor this winter.

I honestly don't see this happening and I don't see Hendry trading Pie for Willis. Now if the deal included maybe Pagan/Murton, Veal, and JJ I would do it in a heart beat. Like I said the asking price for Willis has to come down considering the year he is having.

This according to MLBRUMORS-

Don't expect the Cubs to make any trades, despite some names like Griffey, Gagne and Payton being floated. First of all, Griffey Jr., while a favorite of Pinella's, would be way too expensive. If they can't sign Zambrano, imagine the outrage among fans and Zambrano himself, if they laid out big bucks for Griffey. While Gagne is coveted by various clubs at the moment, the Cubs' bullpen is in pretty decent shape. They did very well during Ryan Dempster's absence and not only is he back, but it looks like Kerry Wood might actually be close to rejoining the team. His rehab is going well and he is expected to move up to triple-A, getting him one step closer to returning to Wrigley, no longer as a starter but as a reliever. While Matt Murton was brought up from the minors the other day, Jacque Jones' resurgence in center field since the All-Star break might make any further moves there unnecessary and even counter-productive. The chemistry is unmistakably good there right now and bringing in another outfielder, just for the sake of making a trade doesn't make sense. Murton should stay and be given the job of spelling Soriano and Floyd down the stretch.

While I do agree with some of his points, what I don't agree with Hendry standing on the sidelines. Hendry is always looking for the team to get better. Acquiring players like Lee, Aram, Pierre, Lofton, etc at the deadline or during the season. Hendry is not the type to stand around as Texieria goes to Atlanta, the stros getting Wiggington, Phills getting Guchi, etc. The trade may not be a big trade but there will be a trade before the deadline.

Other rumors-

The recent hot rumors have been these

2. Dye to the Cubs
3. Payton to the Cubs
4. Willis to the Cubs
5. Gagne to the Cubs

Interesting huh??? I should point out 90% of rumors never happen lol

Payton trade looks close???

According to the Balt. Sun-

An industry source confirmed yesterday that the Orioles and Chicago Cubs have engaged in significant trade talks regarding outfielder Jay Payton as the non-waiver deadline approaches.A Cubs scout attended last week's series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Camden Yards. Payton started two of the three games and went 2-for-8 with two RBIs.In return for Payton, the Orioles likely would receive two mid-level prospects from the Cubs' farm system.

Not a bad player but I think the cubs could do better. Now that Ty Wigginton is off the block it does make things more difficult but there are players like Lorretta for a MI and why not make a splash and get Griffey? Then you could use Jones as a role player in the OF.

Murton scratched?? Matt to the Reds ??? Could Griffey and/or Arroyo be cubs???

First off from MLBTRADERUMORS-

Matt Murton was a late scratch for tonight's Cubs-Reds game. Does it mean anything? We should know soon enough. This time of year, every scratch or unexpected mid-game substitution is magnified.
The Cubs have been talking to the Rangers about lefty reliever Ron Mahay and catcher Gerald Laird, so maybe there's a connection. The Rangers could definitely find room for Murton in their outfield.
Take it with a grain of salt, but a Cubs source of mine confirms Felix Pie's availability (huh?) and says the Cubs made an inquiry on Torii Hunter. While intriguing, I wouldn't expect either player to be traded.

Here we go!!! With the trade rumors flying around like June Bugs in June, ESPN 1000 is reporting that a deal that would send Murton and a couple of prospects to the Reds is taking shape. The cubs are said to have "no interest" in acquiring Adam Dunn and ESPN is speculating that the Cubs have made a "strong push" towards acquiring Griffey Jr. and have offered the Reds an "very attractive package of players" that could send Pie along with Murton and a couple of pitching prospects( tho they didn't say what prospects). They also speculated that this could be a three way trade or the Reds could be offering Arroyo up if the Reds get Hill, Pie, Murton, and a prospect but that seems unlikely. If the deal goes thru it wont be finalized until after the Reds/Cubs series which ends Sunday.

They talked for about 5 minutes on the subject, if I hear any more I will update all my devoted readers. Either way this trade is both int resting and seems somewhat fair even tho I hate giving up Pie or Hill. But to get talented players you need to give up talented players.

GO CUBS!

Some Cubs Notes

Thanks to cubs.com-

CINCINNATI -- Kerry Wood joined the Cubs Saturday night at Great American Ball Park, but he's not ready to be activated for the big-league team. Not yet, at least.
Wood, who has been battling shoulder tendinitis, made his third rehab outing for Class A Peoria on Friday, and has pitched seven rehab innings over seven outings for that team and for the Mesa Rookie League team.
The Cubs want to be very conservative in Wood's rehab and avoid any setbacks, and he will likely make a few more Minor League outings, pitching more than one inning in at least one game. The right-hander could be a huge factor in the final two months of the season out of the bullpen.
"Earlier in the year, we were able to get some nice work out of our younger pitchers in the bullpen, and I'm talking about [Billy] Petrick and [Rocky] Cherry and whoever was here," manager Lou Piniella said. "Lately, that area is starting to leak a little bit. It's good to see Kerry throwing the ball well."
Cherry gave up two runs on one hit and one walk over one-third of an inning in Friday's 5-4 loss to Cincinnati.
At Mesa, Wood gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and one walk while striking out five over four innings in four games. He pitched one inning in each outing, as he has done for Peoria. His totals in three appearances for the Class A team are one hit, one walk, three strikeouts and no runs.
"Let's keep our fingers crossed, and at the same time, let's monitor the situation carefully," Piniella said. "We're getting ourselves in a situation here where the months of August and September, they're experience months for pitching. If Kerry -- and I haven't seen the reports from last night -- but if he's on track, I don't see any reason why we can't get him here sooner rather than later."
Wood did start four games last season for the Cubs in his comeback year from arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and was able to pitch this spring before being shut down with tendinitis.
Cleanup hitter: Mark DeRosa was pretty pumped before Saturday's game because he was listed in the fourth spot for the first time since his college days with the University of Pennsylvania baseball team. He would've been the eighth player to hit fourth for the Cubs this season, joining Aramis Ramirez, Cliff Floyd, Michael Barrett, Derrek Lee, Matt Murton, Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward.
"It's nice to see an Italian last name in the four-hole," DeRosa said.
However, Piniella made a late switch half an hour before the game and Floyd was inserted into the No. 4 spot and DeRosa dropped to fifth. Murton was scratched from the starting lineup and replaced by Floyd.
Ramirez, who has a tender knee, was given Saturday off, part of the Cubs' plan to rest him from time to time, and DeRosa was to have subbed for him. Ramirez and Lee, who was hitting third, walked past the lineup card as DeRosa stared at it. Both teased DeRosa.
"When you see a guy batting fourth, he's the home run threat, ribbies [RBIs]," DeRosa said. "The best hitters on the team hit three or four. I guess I'm one of them. For a day. And on my daughter's birthday, too."
Hopefully, daughter Gabriella had a good day.
Backstop: Piniella still plans on alternating Jason Kendall and Koyie Hill behind the plate. Kendall did catch back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, but that was to keep Hill aligned with Carlos Zambrano, who is starting on Sunday.
"I'm going to catch whoever is swinging the bat," Piniella said. "This alternating thing seems like a fairly good idea unless somebody gets hot. Also, we have a pretty good winning percentage when Hill catches. I'm aware of that, too."
The Cubs are 15-6 with Hill behind the plate, and the pitchers have a 2.51 ERA. Saturday was Kendall's eighth game since he was acquired from the Oakland Athletics. He did come through with a game-tying RBI single in the ninth inning on Friday.
"Gerald [Perry] has been his batting coach the past two places," Piniella said of Perry, who worked with Kendall in Oakland and in Pittsburgh. "By sitting him from time to time, Gerald can get more work with him."
Penmanship: The Cubs want to watch the starting pitchers' pitch count, and have lifted Zambrano and Ted Lilly a little early to keep them strong for the second half. But Jason Marquis and Rich Hill each lasted just five innings in the last two games, and the Cubs bullpen has had to pick up the slack.
"What we need is for our starting pitching to go a little deeper in the ballgame," Piniella said. "We've had two five-inning starts on this road trip. It puts a little bit more of a strain on things. As long as they go into the seventh, we're in pretty good shape."
No one is overworked, Piniella said, but he did admit they were running into "a couple leaks."
"We're starting to struggle a little bit, that's all I'm trying to say," he said.
Despite using six relievers on Friday, the Cubs' 285 relief appearances rank third-fewest in the National League.
Extra bases: The Cubs entered Saturday's action ranked 13th in home runs with 82. "Home runs are probably down all over baseball," Piniella said. "It is somewhat surprising that 16 home runs leads our team. I'm interested in winning baseball games, not how many home runs we have." ... WGN Radio's Pat Hughes missed his third straight game because he was battling a bout of food poisoning. ... Looking ahead to the Cubs' homestand against Philadelphia, they will start Lilly on Monday followed by Marquis, Hill and Sean Marshall. ... Both the Aug. 5 game against the Mets and the Aug. 19 game against the St. Louis Cardinals have been picked up by ESPN and will be begin at 7:05 p.m. CT.
Minor matters: Geovany Soto hit a two-out, three-run homer in the fifth in Iowa's 7-6 loss to Colorado Springs on Friday. Buck Coats had three hits and one RBI. ... Kyle Reynolds had four hits, including a two-run homer and a three-run blast, in Tennessee's 14-1 win over Carolina. ... Jeff Samardzija gave up six runs on 12 hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings while striking out six in Daytona's 6-2 loss to Jupiter. ... Jeremy Papelbon gave up five runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings in Peoria's 6-2 loss to Dayton. ... Dustin Sasser gave up one earned run on three hits over five innings in Boise's 6-3 win over Vancouver.
On deck: Zambrano will close this series on Sunday against the Reds, seeking his 14th victory. He has yet to beat the Reds in two starts this year. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on WGN.

Check out this trade that would never happen

I have heard some interesting trades thru fans, Internet, newspaper columns, etc but none of these equal the lack of intelligence of this trade. This is from MLBtraderumors but they got the info from Joel Sherman's column-

Backwards Center Field Trade Bait

Most of Joel Sherman's column today is filled with the Mark Teixeira stuff you've been reading about everywhere else. (I, for one, am now absolutely sure of how to spell Tex's name. A couple of weeks ago? Not so much.)

But, there are two tidbits buried in the column that are interesting both on their own and juxtaposed.

First, Sherman corroborates Buster Olney's claim that the Yankees are hot after Dan Johnson. But he gives us more: Billy Beane asked for Brett Gardner and was rejected. Uh, Brett Gardner? Useful player, perhaps, but the Yanks are interested in Johnson because he's a useful player too, and one who is a lot more likely to help them this year (and next, too, in all likelihood). Sherman interprets that as New York's new protectiveness of their prospects. Too bad there isn't another ~$15M rental like Bobby Abreu out there this year ... unless you count Richie Sexson, whom I don't.

Second, he repeats the common Gerald Laird-to-the-Cubs refrain, but adds a twist:
The Cubs have interest in Laird and Rangers relievers, and might include center field prospect Felix Pie to get that.

I suppose Laird + Eric Gagne might merit Pie. Maybe. It would certainly make the Cubs more credible contenders immediately, but...Felix Pie?

What an odd world it is, when Brett Gardner is off the block, and Felix Pie is on.

Are you kidding me??? Pie for a reliever that has arm problems and a catcher who has a lifetime .257 average and has good defense?? I wouldn't give up more than Eyre and Cedeno for Laird and I would prefer having Kendall than him at this moment or for Blanco for that matter. Blanco has better defense and better bat than Laird. Now for Gagne is a different story. I would love to have him but not for Pie, maybe for a couple of other minor leaguers like Coats and Murton but not Pie. In fact there is very few players I would trade Pie for and even few catchers. So no to trading Pie unless you come with names like Salty or Crawford. So Joel stick to writing about east coast baseball, something you have knowledge about, instead of throwing out ridiculous trades that invlove Pie( our #1 prospect) and two players that dont equal his value at all.

Church might be good for cubs? More Dunn and Griffey rumors

Thanks to MLB.com

Cubs, Nationals: The Cubs appear to have renewed their interest in Washington's Ryan Church as a fourth outfielder for their stretch run. The Cubs originally inquired about him during the Winter Meetings, but nothing came of that. The same obstacle may be in place this time: GM Jim Bowden is asking a high price for the young player. So far this season, Church is hitting .259 with seven home runs, numbers that are considerably down from 2006. He said he's not going to let the trade talk bother him."It's not up to me," Church said. "I have no control over it. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. You have to look at it as another opportunity."The Nationals are close to signing Dmitri Young to a two-year extension, according to multiple sources. Young is Washington's most important player this season. A leader in the clubhouse and on the field, he was leading the Nationals in hitting (.331), RBIs (52) and on-base percentage (.386) entering Thursday's action.

Here we go more rumors on Dunn and Griffey on Mlbtraderumors-

Unconfirmed Rumor: Cubs Looking At Griffey, Dunn
Didn't hear the report myself, but a loyal reader dropped me an email.

Apparently a recent Bruce Levine report for ESPN Radio 1000 had some interesting Cubs rumors. Levine says the Cubs might try to trade for Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr. Any deal would likely include Sean Gallagher, and the Cubs called up Matt Murton today to showcase him.

This rumor leaves more questions than answers:

Would the Cubs again move their superstar signing Alfonso Soriano to center or right field to create a spot for Dunn?

If not, how ugly would Dunn be in right field at Wrigley? He hasn't played the position regularly since 2001.

With the management situation in flux, could the Cubs really take on Griffey's contract, which runs through 2008? Or even the $3.8MM still owed to Dunn this year?

Are Arby's new popcorn chicken shakers as tasty as they look on TV?

Would Gallagher and Murton be enough for either of those players?

If you can get Jr. for Murton and Gallagher I would do it in a second. Hell we would even throw in Cedeno, Eyre, and Cotts if they would take them.

Cherry and Murton called up, and my theory.

Rocky Cherry and Matt Murton were called up today and no word yet on who will be sent to Iowa. Murton who had struggled to have success in the majors along with Cherry will get a second chance to prove that they belong on the club. The two players who I think will be sent down today is Billy Petrick and Jake Fox to make room for Matt and Rocky. Jake who has seen minimal playing time in the ML level will benefit more in Iowa where he will get more PT. Petrick needs to fine tone his pitches and command before he is able really succeed in the ML level. Matt has done really well in Iowa, lets hope he can continue it in Chicago.

I do have a theory on why the Cubs called up Murton and Cherry. Murton is a valuable trading chip on this team. He has shown success and failers at the ML level and exceeded in the minors. He is a perfect candidate for a trade because alot of teams would be willing to take a chance on this kid because of this upside( which is a guy who hits .300 with 20hrs). Cherry who has shown times of brilliance would be a solid reliever on alot of teams but unfortunately he isn't on the cubs. With him being called up and down it no wonder why the cubs could be showing him off before the deadline. The fact of the matter is there will be tons of scouts in the stands to watch Griffey and Dunn and this is a chance for Hendry to show off his trading chips while trying to win. Not only will the Cubs be showing off Murton and Cherry and a few others to scouts in the stands, they will be showing them off the the Reds in a possible deal sending Griffey( who would be ideal) or Dunn( which wouldn't be bad if we had a place to play him) to the cubs. The other team would be good in a deal would be the Drays, try to send them Murton, Cherry, and a minor leaguer for Wiggington. That would be a great move for the cubs.

Hendry is a smart guy if this is his intention.

But thats just my theory, I could be wrong.
